What Shielding Gas Should I Use When MIG Welding

When MIG welding there are numerous different shielding gas options for welders to choose from. This article will talk about the most common type of gas mixutres and their purpose

  • Carbon Dioxide (CO2): CO2 is the least expensive of the common shielding gases for MIG welding Steel. Using Pure CO2 provides a very deep weld penetraction, which is useful for welding thick material. However, it produces a less stable arc and more spatter than when it is mixed with other gases. It is also limited to only the short circuit process. 
  • 75% Argon 25% CO2: 75/25 is the most common shielding gas for MIG welding steel. It provides a more desirbale combindation of arc stability, puddle control, and reduced spatter compared to pure CO2. 75/25 is used when welding in short circuit process. 
  • 90% Argon 10% CO2: 90/10 shielding gas is used for Pulse welding process. Pulse welding has a more stable arc and reduces the amount of spatter creating less time grinding and finishing. Pulsing offers controlled heat input leading to less distortion and improved quallity. 
  • 90% Helium 8% Argon 2% CO2 TriMix: Trimix gas is used for the MIG welding stainless steel. Helium allows the high heat that is needed to weld stainless steel. However, do to the high cost of helium in todays market Mix Gases such as 98% Argon 2% CO2 are becoming a popular replacement.
